More and more, the term "Indigo Child" has
not only entered into the mainstream, but
is being recognized by counselors and teachers.
The short definition of an Indigo Child is,
simply, a more finely-tuned human who is
sensitive in many ways above and beyond what
we have come to believe -- simply because
they have brought a higher spiritual vibration
into their physical bodies.
I had heard Jan Tober and Lee Carroll speak
of Indigo Children. My curiosity was aroused
when they suggested that there are also Indigo
Adults. Though, according to Kryon, the eldest
of the current influx of Indigoes are now
in their 30s, and I was in my mid-50s, I
seemed to have so many of the characteristics
of those children that I had to wonder .
. . could there be any "older" Indigoes?
The answer came about in 2002 at a channeling
by Steve Rother. The entity (or entities)
that he channels call themselves "The
Group." During the question and answer
session, I asked if there are Indigoes over
50 years old. The Group spoke of two other
Indigoes in the room at that time - and then
said to me, "Yes, my dear, you are an
Indigo. You came in as a scout to see if
those of that energy could survive."
I was floored. In that crystal moment of
verification, so much about my life made
sense. I had always felt different and was
always an outsider, but years of psychological
counseling convinced me the "wrongness" was
with me, not others. As a high school English
teacher, I never fit into the educational
environment. I had few close friends. I felt
uncomfortable in large groups, except for
retreats and workshops where experiential
work was the focus: in those places I thrived.
Back in the ordinary world, I had to "shut
down" every time I walked into my classroom,
because instinctively I knew too much about
the youngsters sitting in front of me, and
would feel their sensitivities if I remained
open.
In the years following my retirement from
teaching, my husband and I traveled throughout
upstate New York working at craft shows,
health fairs and psychic fairs. Our focus
was semiprecious gemstones and sharing their
energies with people we met. Many were young
people, from eight years old to teenagers,
who already knew they were sensitive to stone
energies. Some were new to such things, but
awakened quickly as they held a particular
stone for which they seemed to have an affinity.
There have even been young parents of Indigoes
who are Indigoes themselves, but had no idea
of the advanced energies they carry or nurture.
Of the Indigoes we've met at these events,
most felt to us to be open, expressing their
feeling of "waiting until someone understood" --
appearing wide eyed and innocent, yet with
a firm connection to their inner Self. If
they did not already know this, they sometimes
recognized it when it was gently pointed
out to them.
This is one of the outstanding characteristics
of Indigoes: they have a strong intuitive
voice and need help recognizing it and trusting
it. More than two years after leaving the
work force as a full time teacher, I finally
began to trust my own inner knowing. This,
after so many years of struggle in a society
that prefers observable facts over intuition,
brushing the latter aside as an unreliable
source of knowledge.
We Indigoes are special, but not better.
This is a factor that is most important for
non-Indigoes to understand. Non-Indigoes
are no less precious or special than Indigoes
- all have their own gifts to share; Indigoes
are just differently "assigned." Discovering
those gifts is often a lifetime process,
sometimes difficult for Indigoes and non-Indigoes
alike.
It has been true for many years that our
children are our teachers. Often, a parent
will go through his or her own childhood
issues as a child goes through the stages
of infant, toddler, child and adolescent
- yet most parents of school age children
are ignorant of this fact. According to both
Kryon and Steve Rother's Group, Indigoes
have come as humanity's teachers. Many Indigoes
have come into families who know nothing
about their abilities; others have chosen
families with strict religious beliefs and
values which include the belief that any
psychic gifts are evil. These are the choices
they make before they incarnate.
While all children are teachers to some
degree, the difference that sets off most
Indigo Children is that they often know more
than their parents, in that they can perceive
lessons from their own remembrances. All
humans have access to this information through
various techniques and alternative healers;
and some have an easier time of change and
understanding than others. But Indigoes --
Indigoes just KNOW, viscerally and with deep
understanding.
Much has been written and discussed regarding
Indigoes mistakenly diagnosed as having ADD
and ADHD. These traits are merely the result
of an extremely intelligent, active, and
questing mind combined with intuition. The
Indigo mind moves in ten directions at once,
and is often several questions ahead of any
speaker and several pages ahead of whatever
they read. Focus and self-disciplines are
skills that need to be taught to Indigoes
- a difficult task, yet they can adapt quite
well, with minds that are superlative at
multitasking.
This kind of encompassing mental activity,
going on "behind the eyes" and
not evident to an onlooker, often makes Indigoes
seem reserved and uncommunicative, especially
teenagers who desperately want to fit in.
They learn quickly to keep their minds separate
from their social activities and their circle
of friends in the name of acceptance, often
paying the price in loneliness and isolation
- yet, knowing they are somehow intrinsically "different";
the need for acceptance can be overwhelming.
Truly, this is a Catch-22. Explaining why
they feel different - and reassuring them
of their own value -- seems to be the task
set for my husband and me as we meet Indigoes
and their parents in our geographic area.
Once they realize what it means to be Indigo,
the child opens up and begins to discover
his or her special gifts, often unable to
stop talking about their own surprise, awe
and wonder.
Sometimes parental concerns lead to a professional
diagnosis of disassociative disorder, with
the diagnosed person mentally disassociating
from their surroundings when they become
bored or feel threatened with non-acceptance.
While I do not presume to diagnose medically,
as such are not credentials, through my observation
and experience I would question the validity
of such a blanket diagnosis. I would ask
that another paradigm be considered with
equal weight: that it is merely a learned
behavior born out of boredom or wariness
from a mind that moves many times faster
and in different directions than even those
with exceptional intelligence.
The Indigo mind automatically thinks "out
of the box." It was an Indigo youngster
who solved the Y2K computer dilemma leading
to uneventful millennia New Year's Eve celebration
1999. Even before I discovered I came with
the Indigo Energy, I often thought of myself
as having been born as a right brained person
with flairs for artistic and creative endeavors
but trained by our educational system into
a being left brained person. It has been
a difficult journey moving back to and learning
to trust the right brain/intuition. It is
vital that our new crop of Indigoes not be
shoehorned into a similar situation.
Most Indigoes also have no use for information
which they perceive as inapplicable to anything
practical, or contrary to their own interests
and skills. No longer are many of these youngsters
willing to accept the general liberal arts
curricula offered by our educational institutions.
Even those of us who did not rebel while
we were in school give short shrift to topics,
discussions or entertainment that cannot
captivate us quickly and thoroughly - but
for those things which fascinate, we Indigoes
can never get enough information, staying
with it for hours at a time. When the creative
urge hits an Indigo, hours seem to disappear
like minutes.
Indigo children need help learning to pay
attention to that intuitive voice and recognizing
which experiences point them in meaningful
directions. This knowingness is the cornerstone
of the Indigo's life. Humans of this energy
vibration know when they don't feel up to
par or feel grumpy, but often they don't
know why. While current physical ailments
can be from abusing the body in earlier years,
that's not the only difficulty. Indigoes
open to a higher vibration seem to be more
sensitive to their surroundings and the foods
they consume.
In my journey to physical health, I have
learned much about everything that affects
me, including chemicals I ingest and those
around me. My skin can no longer tolerate
cleaning compounds. Your Indigo Child may
evidence this in the form of irritations
when in contact with clothing, bedroom curtains,
furniture coverings, and bed sheets. Synthetic
fabrics and chemicals in detergents leave
their residue on skin which is our most extensive
sensory organ. How can we NOT be affected
by harmful synthetic substances? It's time
to educate ourselves with the abundance of
available information, scientific AND intuitive,
supporting our growing need as a species
to forego those elements which contribute
to not only our physical ill health, but
weaken our vibratory level, making all of
us less aware of our intuitive voice.
Many foods we consume have been proven harmful
to the physical body and many ailments for
which we seek physician's advice can be directly
related to nutrition. Refined sugar is a
major culprit; chemical food additives contribute
immensely to depleting those natural elements
essential our physical well-being.
Let's take magnesium as an example. Sugar
depletes magnesium levels; specific dyes
and chemicals in preserved foods and drinks
deplete magnesium. According to Nutritional
Healing by Phyllis Balch, CNC, and James
Balch, MD, magnesium deficiency can manifest
as insomnia, confusion, irritability, poor
digestion, rapid heartbeat, seizures, tantrums,
asthma, chronic fatigue, and chronic pain.
If this is true for one vital nutritional
mineral, magnify this many times and speculate
on the results in our youngsters, Indigo
and non Indigoes alike!
Perhaps those who seem overly concerned
with health foods and exercise have good
reason for being adamant in their cause.
They could well be the ones leading the way,
teaching us that taking care of our physical
well being better serves our spiritual well
being. When it comes to Indigoes, this is
not an option - it is a necessity. As they
show us the value of acceptance, diet, exercise,
and paying attention to that inner knowingness
which we label intuition, they show us by
example that we truly are spiritual beings
manifest in physical form.
Finally, there is a powerful need to reconnect
with the natural world. Natural sunlight
is, for Indigoes, as necessary as breathing.
Seasonal Affective Disorder is recognized
by the medical community; it is merely a
lack of the ultraviolet sunlight upon which
our spiritual bodies feed. Full spectrum
lighting (NOT lighting such as found in tanning
booths, which is harmful) has been proven
to change mood and behavior in hyperactive
children. Additionally, communing with nature
-- touching the earth, the stones, the waters
and feeling the breath of air and the warmth
of the sun on our skin -- gives us tangible
reminders of our physicality and oneness
with Mother Gaia. This is a human need, enhanced
and magnified by the energies that Indigoes
bring with them into physical reality.
Nelson Mandela shared these concepts in
his 1994 Inaugural Speech, quoting from Marianne
Williamson :
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, "Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?"
Actually, who are you not to be? . . .
We were born to make manifest he glory of
God that is within us.
It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone . . ..
Welcome our Indigo Children. Understand
that they are different - not "better." And
that they come bringing marvelous gifts to
prepare us for the generations of Lightbearers
to follow.
