Gemma Dumont is the owner/creator
of EARTH AND SKY CREATIONS and specializes
in healing tools that help one feel and
see one's strengths and potentials. Her
wands and jewelry are breathtaking, combining
deerhide, copper, crystals, feathers
and fur in elegant and enchanting ways.
I purchased a wand in York this past
August and was so struck with her workmanship
that I called to interview her.
FTS: Gemma, how did you start your
work?
GD: In 1987, I moved to Pennsylvania.
My mother was already working with
crystals and making wands at that point.
When she first put crystals in my hand,
I was immediately drawn to them - I
felt blown away by the energy coursing
through me!
I started making wands right away.
It felt like destiny. A month after
I moved up, my mother and I took our
wands to a show and put out a prayer: "Are
we supposed to be doing this now? Please
give us a sign if it is what we are
supposed to be doing." And the
show was a wild success! So we definitely
got our OK from the spirits.
FTS: You say your mother was already
making wands. Was this a family tradition
and you came along to take up the next
generation's work?
GD: Well, my family
was always doing craftwork - it is a
family tradition. Part of it probably
comes from the fact that I'm part Native
American - my great grandmother was a
full-blooded Penobscot.
FTS: Is your mother still working
with you?
GD: Not exactly directly.
She has transitioned - and while she's
not sitting next to me at the worktable,
I know she is watching and giving me
advice on another level.
FTS: Have you changed the wands
since your mother started making them?
GD: Yes, they have
changed. At first we did not do beadwork
- we used colored string to hold on the
fur and did patterning with it. Then
I started using beadwork, and it felt
like I'd done it before. And right after
I started adding beads to the wands I
had a very intense dream - I was sitting
with a Native American Elder who was
showing me old beads. I felt like that
was another "okay" from Spirit.
And the wands did become more popular
when I started adding beadwork. They
are now being sold not only in the United
States but also Switzerland, Belgium
and Japan.
FTS: Do you do custom work?
GD (laughing): If
someone has a special design in mind,
or if they are seeking wands for specific
uses, we always love to share in the
creation of them. But in a way each piece
is custom, because I feel very strongly
that each piece is made for a specific
person. The person and the wand will
know each other when they meet. You were
an example yourself - if you remember,
I said that I felt urged to finish your
wand before the opening of the [York]
Expo because I knew it was going to go
home with its "person" that
weekend.
FTS: Yes, that's true. I put my
hand on what was to become my wand
and literally did not want to let it
go! And I was not wand shopping that
day at all.
GD: That's very often
what happens. I'm often curious to watch
when a wand doesn't sell for a while.
But eventually everyone finds their right
partner.
FTS: All right - I've bought a wand
now, because it said "I'm going
home with you!" But I'm not sure
how to use it.
GD: Any of our healing
tools can help you to feel and see your
strengths and potential. Our wands are
thought and feeling amplifiers. By visualizing
the highest, most powerful image of love,
light and healing, we're able to participate
in the global reawakening now taking
place. All of our wands are made with
the intent to be of the highest good
for all concerned.
FTS: One of the things that struck
me about your wands was the variety
of materials used. Most wands I've
seen are metal and crystal, but there
is so much more to yours. What goes
into making them?
GD: Our wands are made from copper
tubing in which crystals and other
minerals are firmly secured. A special
mixture of herbs composed of sage,
cedar, sweet grass, and tobacco, is
placed in each wand after being offered
to the Spirit that moves in all things.
These herbs are a perfect balance of
yin and yang, having the capacity to
eliminate negativity by maintaining
a balanced energy within each wand.
There is also vibhuti (sacred ash)
added.
Powerful symbols are then carved on
the copper tubing, protecting the wand
from negative or dark uses, as well
as guarding the user from negativity.
In addition, stones and/or crystals
are placed inside the wands. These
usually correspond to the seven chakras,
but special stones are sometimes selected
for a specific person or purpose. The
wands are then wrapped with leather
or suede, and decorated with fur, feathers,
stone beads or colorful metallic thread
wrapped in a DNA spiral, intensifying
the energy. Many prayers are offered
to Great Mystery during the creation
of these tools
FTS: Personally,
I love the fur and leather, but I know
there are some people who are vegetarian
or vegan who would have trouble with
these.
GD: We have that covered! We also
make vegetarian wands (no animal products),
wrapped in simulated leather fabrics.
FTS: What's the
best way to take care of these wands?
I took mine out to Los Angeles for a
reading tour, and had it wrapped in tissue
and toweling and a rigid containerÖ it
was interesting getting it through Security!
GD: You did a good job - you understand
that wands and crystals are fragile.
These are our creative children at
Earth and Sky and we ask that you take
care not to drop or bang them. If your
wand has fur that becomes mussed, take
a lightly damp wash cloth to it, rubbing
downward until its proper shape is
restored. It's best to keep your wand
wrapped in something special for protection
against breakage - what you devised
is fine.
FTS: Can one use
the wand, as they say, 'right out of
the box' or is there a special ritual
that is needed to set the energy in motion
for the new owner?
GD: Before the new owner uses the
wand, it needs to be cleared and programmed.
You can do this by holding the wand
over your heart and visualizing the
purest, brightest, most powerful white
light pouring into your crown, filling
your whole being and opening your heart.
Then, with the intent to clear, send
this light through the wand, and know
that any negativity the wand may have
picked up on its way to you has been
totally cleansed.
Now touch the crystal to your third
eye (above the center of the brow).
See that which you wish to program
as already being done. Visualize it
clearly and perfectly. Be grateful
to the Spirit that moves in all things,
and offer thanks, as if you've already
received the gifts you are seeking.
FTS: Then how do
we work with it? I have been using it
during my trance readings, but it was
primarily created as a healing tool,
wasn't it?
GD: That's right, though using it
as you are using it is perfectly fine.
These wands are powerful tools and
have many uses. Be creative. Anything
you can imagine, you can achieve.
When you are ready to do healing work,
breathe deeply and center yourself
in calm, loving space. Open your crown
Chakra (on the top of the head), and
allow your whole being to be filled
with light. In some healing work the
first stage is the removal of density
(pain, illness, blockages, etc). Place
the wand in whichever hand feels most
comfortable. Point it at the area being
worked on, and move it in a counter-clockwise
circle. See the density being sucked
up into the wand (like a powerful vacuum
cleaner).
When you feel everything necessary
has been removed, point the wand towards
the earth, and with a flick of the
wrist, send the density into the ground
for neutralization. This may have to
be done several times until it feels
right. Now, go into your heart-knowing
center, fill yourself to overflowing
with a waterfall of light, see it streaming
out of your heart, your whole being,
and into the wand.
When you are ready, point the wand
at the area that you have been working
on and wave it in a clockwise direction.
Visualize this light, like a laser
beam, filling the area with healing
love and intent. Let universal love
and compassion flow with the light
into this work. Remember that it may,
or may not be Spirit's will that total
healing occurs. All you can do is offer
your service for the highest good and
place the rest in Spirit's hands.
Allow your intuition to guide you
in creating your own healing rituals.
You might send love and healing to
our Mother Earth, or light a peace
to world leaders.
FTS: Gemma, how
do people reach you if they want to purchase
a wand?
GD: We will have a website up, hopefully
before the end of the year, but in
the meantime they can call me at (570)
222-2015 or email me at gemmaearthnsky@yahoo.com.
FTS: This has been wonderful, Gemma.
Thank you!
GD: Thank you - love
and light to you, and enjoy your wand!
